In 2017 my wife and I packed up our infant son, dog, said goodbye to our dearest friends and family, and relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area to Metro Detroit. 

Quite the change, right? 

What was initially a plan to build a better life for our family in a lower cost of living location turned into the best thing that ever happened for us financially.

By mid-2018, for many reasons, we knew we did not want to stay in Michigan. I came up with a plan: Buy as many Detroit rental properties as humanly possible, as quickly as possible, so we could move back to California without sacrificing our lifestyle. I figured, if we went absolutely nuts, we could make it happen in 3-5 years. I knew we’d need at least $15,000/mo in gross rents to pull it off.

In August 2022 we officially relocated back to California. We achieved our goal and I couldn’t be happier.

Was it a ton of work? Oh my gosh, yes!

Was it worth it? 

A million times over, yes.

Detroit is still absolutely brimming with opportunity and I am confident that if you’re wanting to replicate my success you absolutely can.
